Petroleum field management in three stages (life-cycle, short-term and real-time)

The objective of this presentation is to present recent developments of a three-stage methodology for petroleum field management (life-cycle, short-term, and real-time), following the model-based closed-loop field management framework proposed by Schiozer et al. (2019). After fit-for-purpose model building and data assimilation for uncertainty reduction, life-cycle production optimization is performed to generate production control setpoints, which serve as the baseline controls for the short-term optimization stage. Short-term optimization is then carried out to improve the quality of the solutions by optimizing the control variables for the next decision cycle within a closed-loop framework. Finally, the real-time optimization stage is implemented to account for operational disturbances observed during field operations by using machine learning-assisted, data-driven production forecasting and optimization. The methodology is being applied to benchmark cases representing typical Brazilian pre-salt carbonate reservoirs containing light oil and operated under Water-Alternating-Gas injection with CO₂ (WAG-CO₂). Results indicate significant improvements in production performance and operational efficiency compared with conventional life-cycle optimization approaches.
