Multiscale simulation of CCS inspired by Santos, Porthos and Kujukuri
Despite growing renewable energy contributions, today's carbon-based economy cannot reach net-zero by 2050 without CCS. Successful CCS requires reservoirs with high capacity and seal integrity located close to dense emitters, as well as clear legal frameworks and public acceptance of the shared benefits, costs, and risks. My talk at the ES Summit 2026 is focused on advanced multiscale simulations inspired by three global projects: the Santos Basin, a giant aquifer where hysteretic residual, capillary, and dissolution trapping are critical; PORTHOS, a smaller depleted gas field where cooling, injectivity, and thermal effects need attention; and finally the Metropolitan CCS in Kujukuri where appraisal wells are underway to determine the site suitability. But what criteria confirm it as a suitable site? To address this, I share findings from our recent hydrogen storage study on a Dutch national scale. All results are based on our group’s advanced multiscale, multi-physics simulation framework.
